Security Council Debates Conflict in Yemen

Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest country fell into a major humanitarian crisis causing a debate in the Security Council on Monday April 3rd.

This began a civil war that is far from being over. The conflict is especially concerning due to the fact that it involves multiple parties, of which many are fighting for different interests. Yemen’s civil war is one of the most dangerous conflicts the world is currently dealing with. Even though this war only began two years ago, there’s been about 4 million people affected by this war so far.

For instance, there’s both Saudi Arabia and Iran using this as a “proxy war” in order to decide which Islam branch (Sunni or Shia) should rule.

“Saudi Arabia has helped allies and neighbors instead of sponsoring those revels that disrupts the country’s peace in Yemen. Also this delegation considers a lack of respect from delegations here present for saying that the branch of Sunni Islam is the problem in the Middle East. We all know that sunni islam is the branch that has no bad things,” the delegate from Saudi Arabia, said.

There’s also the U.S which is involved in order to support its ally Saudi Arabia, fight terrorism, and try to gain some influence over the Yemeni coastline because the route through which most of the world’s oil passes borders Yemen.

“The United States of America and Saudi Arabia are not committing a crime because they are using their right and their duty to self defense. Why do delegations such as Saudi Arabia and the United States be condemned when it is clear that delegations such as Yemen asked for the help of this parties,” the delegate from United States of America, said.

In addition, there are other world powers such as the UK, France, and China involved along with military aid from a bunch of other countries.

“France has publicly expressed its support for the Hadi government and the Saudi intervention. It is also known that, along with the UK and the U.S, France has provided logistical support to Saudi Arabia,” the delegate from France, said.

On top of that, AQAP ( AL Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula) and ISIL ( Islamic State of Iraq and Lebanon) are taking advantage of the situation in order to terrorise the arab community.

According to the Security Council COSMUN 2017, AQAP and ISIL are involved in the Yemeni conflict, making the U.S be more interested in Yemen as it continues to fight the war on terrorism.
