Becoming a Journalist

I went to my beat to get my first interview, I saw the teacher that I needed to interview and, he had a straight face and didn’t look that happy. My palms were sweating and finally had the guts to talk to him.When I did ask him I only had one minute to take the world out of his mouth to write the best piece of paper I could.This was my first interview. This powerful pedagogy helps us learn how to manage our time effectively.

Journalism class is a new experience for the 11th graders in The Columbus School. coming from a traditional method of learning to the project-based learning we are now. Students get a lot more freedom in project-based learning; we get to choose what we want to do in our class time so we have to be responsible. Also, our work is open to the public, juniors have the chance to get critic by the public eye not only by their peers.“It is definitely intimidating to know that everyone is watching what you wrote in a news article. It makes you pay a lot more attention to what you are writing and publishing in the paper.” Pedro Uribe 11th grade student

Journalism is a new opportunity for students to gain knowledge on how to manage time effectively inside and outside of class. This is a crucial skill for everyone and is something that should be implemented more in school. We, 11th graders, are at the point of time where we need to start making our own decisions and how we manage our time correctly. project based learning classes are helping us do this. A study conducted have they separated an 8th-grade class into two groups one with project-based learning and the other with regular teaching showed “The results of the study revealed that the project-based learning increased students’ statistical literacy levels in the intervention group.” European journal of education and research.
