Drinking and Driving

Even though the law is harsher every day and people are more conscious about the consequences that drinking and driving have, it’s still a major problem for teenagers. Due to the overwhelming effects, teenagers are becoming more responsible since severe laws are being enforced, as well as new apps are being launched that have increased in popularity to avert drinking and driving.

As told by The Columbus School students, each day there are fewer minors driving under the effect of alcohol, mainly because each day the law is more strict, and they could get into serious problems. They also said, teenagers each day are more responsible and if there’s someone driving drunk another student will stop them from doing it. They agreed that parents are the main measure to avoid any accidents, by being in touch with their children and finding them an alternative transportation.

One of the main contributions that started to help to avoid drinking and driving was the law. As the government got absorbed about all the accidents alcohol was causing, they started to enforce new laws. In Colombia, if a driver is caught drinking they will have a substantial penalty, and lose their license. There is also a law that is only applied for teenagers, who aren’t  allowed to drive after 11:00 pm. This is a huge contribution to prevent people underage to drive drunk since the majority of accidents are caused after midnight.

After the law was enforced citizens were absolutely affected, so they started to search for different driving alternatives. Colombia’s insurance companies started to find a solution, so they launched an enormous campaign which allowed drivers to call them if they were drunk, for them to provide a driver whose job is to get the clients home safe.

The percentage of teenagers who drink and drive has decreased in the last 10 years, thanks to all the alternatives in transportation that are being applied every day in the world. Technology has also been a fundamental help, with the comfort of all the new apps created, such as Uber, Tapsy, Lyft… Teenagers are able to get safe to their homes without having to drive under the consequences of alcohol.

As new generations are growing, teens are being exceptionally educated on the effects of drinking and driving, this has helped with the driver’s safety. Frequently, there are more campaigns to create awareness for teenagers since people underage are the future generation we want to protect. These campaigns not only target adults but teens as well, which are self-advocating more showing significant improvement in citizenship.

“Research has shown that factors that help to keep teens safe include parental involvement, minimum legal drinking age, and zero tolerance laws, and graduated driver licensing system”
