Arts, a New Vision Captures Students

TCS Personero and STUCO are promoting theater and drama classes this year in order to help meet the school’s vision; to improve students’ English language communication and presentation skills.

Administration already approved this Student Council idea, and theater will be included in the extracurricular and elective curriculum for students to master self- confidence and concentration skills through acting.

“Students will have more chances to work not only on academic material but also on things that develop their creative thinking and personalities,” Federico Caro, 12th Grade STUCO, Said.

Students from 2nd grade to 12th grade will participate in the theater club. The school supports this project although, if students decide to take it as an extracurricular, it will have an additional cost of $300,000 COP per semester.

“All of the STUCO is working towards this and it will become a reality hopefully this year. If not at the beginning of next year, but before the student council ends its period it’s going to be a reality,” Pablo Monsalve, TCS Personero, said.

The school’s objective is to celebrate diversity and that’s why a theater club is such an innovative idea. The school counts with impressive facilities given the 273 seat and modern light system theater it has.

“When I first came as a Principle their were very few art classes being offered. We do an excellent job with academics, but I feel that as a school is our responsibility to crete well rounded students,” Roger Arbabi, School’s Principal, said.

To promote the arts area the school hired Sofia Arcila to encourage students to participate in sculpture, painting, drawing and art classes. Amazed by the amount of students who wanted to participate in art activities, the school decided to establish a theater club.

“At school we already have small theater club, our plan is to improve it and hire a professional drama teacher,” Fredy Badillo, Extracurricular Coordinator, said.

Currently, 15 students participate in the drama class on Wednesdays after school, the class is directed by 8th Grade Spanish Teacher Marta Vargas. The school objective is to expand this theater club.

“The School will hire a new drama teacher just to for middle school and high school and it will be a elective,” Arbabi said.

The elective is included on the school´s budget and it will not have an additional cost. Students who decide to participate will visit this class 4 times a week.

“The abilities learned in theater have a variety of benefits that apply in real life including body expressions skills, public speaking, elaborating effective presentations, physical expresion, voice tone, projection and presence,” Johan Andres Ocampo, Extracurricular Coordinator, said.
