In a dramatic and pulsating encounter, Atlético Nacional defeated América de Cali 1-0 at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali despite playing with a numerical disadvantage since the 13th minute.
The opening moments faced Nacional pressing for the winning goal. Still, the match complexion drastically changed when Kevin Mier, the goalkeeper, committed a handball outside the box and received a red card.
“The expulsion of Kevin Mier shifted the game’s momentum,” conceded Nacional’s manager, Jhon Bodmer. “We were forced to defend our numerical advantage, and América gained more scoring opportunities,” Bodmer said.
Undeterred, Nacional reshuffled its strategy and focused on preserving its numerical advantage. Regardless, their manager praises the team’s resilience and perseverance.” The players did a fantastic job and deserved the victory,” Bodmer said.
The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Brahian Palacios’ astute pass found Eric Ramírez, who slotted the ball past Diego Novoa to put Nacional ahead.
The second half saw América press relentlessly, seeking an equalizer. However, Harlen “Chipi Chipi” Castillo was the hero of the hour, who stood firm between the posts and produced several crucial saves.
“Chipi Chipi was instrumental in preserving our victory,” Bodmer said. He acknowledges the goalkeeper’s crucial role.
The game’s tension escalated when América’s Víctor Ibarbo received a red card in the 91st minute, restoring numerical parity. However, it was too late for the hosts to salvage anything from the encounter.
“The match was very even, but the red card to Kevin Mier changed the course of the game,” América’s manager, Juan Carlos Osorio, offered his perspective. “Nacional defended well and capitalized on their opportunity.”
This victory keeps Nacional firmly in the race for the Liga Betplay-II final. They will travel to face Millonarios in the final round, needing a victory to secure their place on the championship podium.
