Delegates Excel at MSMUN
Seventeen students from the TCS MUN club attended the Mary Mount school MUN held at Club Ejecutivo on April 27 – 29.
More than half of the students in attendance at the MUN won awards and honorable mentions based on their performance. Presidents awarded students awards like best speech, best rookie, best strategist, and even best delegate overall. MUN is a model of the United Nations held by almost every school in Medellin, that expands young minds within the international limelight.
“It was an amazing event that made all of us feel proud of one another, especially since we got to not only have fun and practice our debating skills but also succeed and uphold the prestige of the school,” Joaquin Perez, TCS MUN Club President, said.
Despite some changes and obstacles, the delegates provided an outstanding performance with Emilia Quintero and Luciano Restrepo winning Best Delegate, Amalia García Best Rookie, Joaquin Perez Outstanding Delegate, Santiago Ramos Best Speaker, Gregorio Velez and Luciano Velez, Best Opening Speech.
“I felt really proud of our delegates, Joaquin and I worked really hard to make sure everyone felt happy and did well, so seeing them succeed was really rewarding,” Emilia Quintero, TCS MUN Club President said.
Even before the MUN began, the competition had already begun. Due to the overflow of potential delegates compared to the amount of TCS students who could attend MSMUN, a mock MUN was held. All interested got assigned a delegation at random and had to elaborate a position paper based on their country’s perspective on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“It was actually relatively easy to choose all the delegates since it was evident who really wanted to be there and their work reflected that,” Quintero said.
Once the delegates were chosen, an informative session was held by the TCS MUN presidents to inform all the rookie delegates on the workings of a MUN. Here they went through all procedures ensuring the delegates arrived at MSMUN well versed.
“After the session, I felt really confident, particularly in my speaking skills and knowledge of the procedure, which made me feel a lot better during the MUN,” Santiago Ramos, MUN delegate said.
With only a week before the MUN was set to begin, there was still conflict within the TCS MUN club. Out of the 23 chosen delegates, 6 dropped out, an unusual sight for a MUN as sought after as the one of the Marymount school.
“We felt really embarrassed when so many people left since not only does the club look really unprofessional, but it affects the delegates in attendance as well,” Quintero said.
For approximately 9 delegates MSMUN was either their first or second MUN, while for the remaining 8 it was more than their 5th, creating a wide gap of experience. Therefore, everyone ate lunch together, maintaining the whole delegation united.
“Everyone worked really hard during the event seeing the older ones help the rookies felt really heartwarming and rewarding for us as presidents. This was an amazing delegation that we truly loved,” Perez said.
