TCS Students Head to Baranquilla for BAMUN

12 Columbus School students are participating in Barranquilla’s Marymount School Model United Nations (BAMUN), from November 4th through November 7th.

Since receiving their invitation earlier this year the students have been preparing for this model by selecting the best delegates to ensure outstanding representation of the school. TCS students chosen to attend have been separated into different committees which are: UNEP, ICJ, DAPNU, ICJ, ILO, and  SECURITY COUNCIL.

“Since we received the memo from Marymount inviting us to form part of their model UN, we opened the registration up for those interested in participating. After we received the names we  started analyzing the student’s experience to check that we are sending the best to represent the school,” Erika Atehortúa, TCS Model United Nations Adviser, said.

The students have to immerse themselves in investigations about their country, their internal and external policies, and their countries’ position towards the topic being debated on the different commissions.

“It’s a rigid task to be well prepared for the model UN. I spent hours doing research on every characteristic my country has related to the case that’s going to be argued during the commission,” Diaz said.

Built upon the student’s assigned topic, they must be able to represent and defend their country in the most outstanding way possible.

“I’m going to  represent the school in International Court of Justice, as Colombia. The topic I am doing my position for is the treatment of government towards illegals,” Federico Caro Diaz, 11th grader, said.

But not only the students are the ones making an immense effort  to compose a distinguished performance during the MUN, but also the school and all the support personnel involved.

“My role as the new head of COSMUN logistics, is to make sure everything turns out great. I’m  in charge of  verifying that all of our resources needed are in the right place, I’m the one liable for the students security while being on the model UN thats why I need to make sure I have all contact numbers and emergency numbers updated,” Johan Andres Ocampo, new head of COSMUN logistics.
