Deciding what to do after high school is a critical decision in every student’s life. At TCS, many students face the additional dilemma of choosing between studying in Colombia or abroad. This complex decision requires careful consideration, as it has the potential to significantly influence one’s future trajectory. By drawing from both student experiences and the insights of a college counselor, individuals can weigh the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing education outside of Colombia.
Sofia Trujillo, a student at TCS, is convinced that studying abroad is the best option. During our interview, she discussed how she has heard numerous positive experiences from others. Despite not considering every aspect, she is prepared to face the challenges of studying abroad. On the other hand, Dina Rechani, the TCS college counselor, holds a different perspective. While she acknowledges the opportunity for personal growth and responsibility that comes with studying abroad, she emphasizes the potential of Colombian universities. According to her, staying in Colombia does not necessarily mean missing out on opportunities.
As mentioned earlier, Sofia believes that studying abroad will lead to a successful future for her. As someone who greatly enjoys traveling, she needs to explore new places. Living abroad opens up these opportunities, especially for a student interested in studying in Europe, a continent known for its connectivity and affordability of transportation. Europe, particularly Spain, has become a popular destination for TCS seniors. Sofia is drawn to studying abroad for the chance to make new friends. Being a social person, she finds it exciting to meet new people. However, for those who view leaving their current friend groups as a challenge, studying abroad may not seem like a good option. This aspect should also be considered when contemplating studying abroad.
“I hope that studying abroad helps me meet new people, establish more relationships, explore other parts of the world, and gain more knowledge,” Trujillo said.
On the other hand, Dina emphasizes the importance of considering Colombia. Drawing from her experience, she firmly believes in the capabilities of Colombian professionals and argues that studying abroad doesn’t necessarily enhance one’s professional skills. Despite students like Sofia holding the misconception that Colombian universities have lower academic standards, Dina points out multiple graduates who have succeeded without studying abroad. She highlights that it’s ultimately one’s personality and the opportunities one pursues within a Colombian university that shapes their future. It’s crucial to recognize that determination and utilizing programs such as semesters abroad can make Colombia a valuable opportunity for TCS graduates.
“Most, if not all, Colombian universities have established exchange programs all around the world, so if students study hard, take advantage of all the opportunities in front of them, and take education seriously, they can have excellent academic and professional opportunities,” Rechani said.
Lastly, when considering studying abroad, it is important to take into account the ease of adapting to new environments and the processes related to housing, economy, and culture. Immersion in a new culture can be particularly challenging for TCS graduates, who may assume familiarity with a country from traveling to it, but living there presents a different experience. This immersion can serve as a powerful eye-opener, showcasing a student’s perseverance and independence. Dealing with a new schedule, legal issues, making friends, living with roommates, and being away during holidays can be both stressful and exciting. Despite these challenges, students like Sofia are eager to embrace them, often taking on part-time jobs to make their dream of studying abroad a reality. Additionally, colleges and universities typically offer international student services offices that can assist with many concerns, although visa issues remain a government matter, these offices help with what they can. With adequate preparation and determination, studying abroad may indeed be the best option for a TCS graduate.
“I think it is a wonderful opportunity to ‘grow up and put on your big boy/girl pants’ and it only offers good personal experience and growth,” Rechani said.
In conclusion, deciding whether to study abroad or in Colombia is a pivotal choice for TCS students, shaping their future paths. While some, like Sofia, see studying abroad as a chance for personal growth, cultural immersion, and expanded horizons, others, like Dina, emphasize the value of Colombian universities and the opportunities they offer. Ultimately, it’s a decision that hinges on individual preferences, determination, and readiness to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with studying in a new environment.
