The Great Pizza Showdown

The night started out with a pizza tasting competition, deciding the places where we were going to order the pizza, the toppings for the pizza and the crust we would like. My whole family anxious for the pizza, waiting  in the living room, all talking at once, while guessing which would be the best pizza they would try, they came out with four different pizza takeouts; Ammazza, Dominos, Papa Johns and Jeno´s pizza .

Ammazza had to be ordered via an app called “Rappi” since it does not offer a delivery. The app is  really efficient, you find a restaurant you want to order from, choose what you want to order from the menu and then a delivery person brings your food. The delivery took about 36 minutes and had a cost of 2.900 pesos (COP) extra .

The pizza we order was half Hongos del Bosque (mushrooms) and half Mediterránea, which had asparagus, artichoke, roasted pepper, and black olives. It was a gourmet pizza, with thin crust and an abundance of good quality ingredients. After my mom Clara Londoño tasted the pizza she describe it as “delicious pizza, full of ingredients and a great quality pizza, but it arrived pretty cold.”

After ordering Ammazza, Papa John’s came next; the call took too long and my family couldn’t help but laugh about how disorganized the service was. It took one minute while they answered and the whole ordering process took about 9-10 minutes. The person who took our order wasn’t agile, the order was taken three times and I had to repeat the location at least two times, my patience was wearing thin and I almost hung up.

Once I finish calling Papa Johns, I called Dominos. Unlike Papa Johns, they answer my call immediately and took my order in 5 minutes, repeating the location and the order wasn’t necessary at all. My whole family was astonished by the good service Domino’s had and kept laughing of Papa John’s bad service.

Dominos is what you look in a delivery pizza, as many of my familiars said, the crust looked like a pillow full of ingredients and the delivery only took about 27 minutes. On the other hand,  Papa John’s wasn’t that attractive, still it had fair amount of ingredients and the delivery took 32 minutes. Both pizzas arrive fairly hot, and both pizzas had 12 slices.  After trying both, my aunt Maria Londoño stated that “Even though most of the time she preferred Papa John’s, this time Dominos was better. The amounts of ingredients that Domino’s had, did not compare to the amount Papa John’s had.”

When I opened both pizzas my appetite diminished as the appearance of the box wasn’t satisfying. What captured my attention was the amount of grease that covered the inside of the box, mostly Papa Johns. My cousins started to fight over who would get the first slice, but when Maria tried to take it, half of the pizza stuck to the box. My mom had to get a pizza cutter and cut the pizza again.

Jeno’s was the final pizza of the evening. When I called they answered pretty fast and their service was good and efficient. I ordered the pizza and they told me the delivery  time would be 30-40 minutes.  40 minutes passed and still no pizza. My family was getting impatient; my brother was so hungry he was seconds away from eating something else. My father’s tolerance was so low that he called Jeno’s  and asked about the pizza. Bad news! The pizza was just being taken out of the oven. Finally, one hour and 15 minutes later the pizza arrived, everyone was so happy that they started laughing.

When my uncle opened the box you could see the disappointment in his face. The pizza  had a really fat, burned crust, and you could barely see the ham.  Some slices didn’t had any ham at all, it was just cheese. When I took the first bite, I was hoping that at least the taste of the pizza was going to change my first impression, WRONG! The pizza was so chewy that once I had my first bite my teeth felt like they were stuck to the pizza crust and would never come off. The crust tasted like old bread with cheese on top. I would never order this pizza again.

Finally, the pizza tasting competition ended.Everyone was ready to leave with their stomachs full and a plan to start a diet. When the final vote was taken it was a  victory for Ammazza. With its thin crunchy crust, high quality toppings  Ammazza with five stars took first place, even though it could have been hotter. Domino’s was the second favorite with Papa Johns and Jenos bringing up rear.

Dominos: 3 stars
“What you look in a delivery pizza,” with a thick crust yet crunchy full of ingredients.
Papa Johns: 2 stars
Bread like crust, not many ingredients but good taste.
Jenos Pizza 0 stars
EXTRA fat crust, too chewy your teeths aren’t able to chew the pizza, very few ingredients, and a really bad service.
