La Guajira

February 13 was the day when two eighth grade groups traveled to the most northern part of Colombia, La Guajira. Before we took on the great journey, we set a main environmental goal.  The goal included lowering the carbon footprint, and comparing it to the carbon footprint of the same trip done in earlier years. The Guajira is an astonishing place and the most essential part of its culture are the native residents. The Wayuu people are heavily affected by the environment. The beauty of their religious beliefs and quotidian life is affected by such simple synthetic objects like plastic bags. Plastic bags are abusively used in Guajira, but the atrocious part is their disposal. The government is not investing in sanitation or recycling. The solution is creation of jobs to clean up the issue, and campaigns to create consciousness about the impacts of plastic and proper waste disposal.
