GIN Aspires to Solve Food Crisis

To address the ongoing food crisis, a group of Columbus School 6th graders has formed to raise awareness and reduce food waste in the Columbus School community.

This new team will be directed by 6th grade Sociales teacher Nasly Vargas; their initiative will start in the school but it might expand later onto other local schools.

“In the world there is an ongoing food crisis and most of the earth’s population that’s suffering under this crisis are dying of hunger… We are part of a school that generates a lot of food waste; the new GIN group has been created for the purpose of fixing this dilemma.” Luz Myriam Arango, 8th grade sociales teacher, said

This project will be directed by Nasly and the 6th grade students that were candidates for STUCCO. The group’s goal is to create conscience in the entire school community about this ongoing problem. An idea to solve this problem is to use the dessert that is given in the cafeteria and donate it to the children who visit our school programs.

“The idea is that we discuss with every class the new measures we are going to be taking with the uneaten dessert that gets thrown away at the end of the day. The team and I will be placing bins all over the cafeteria so that everyone can dispose of their dessert and give it to the children of the foundation” Vargas said.

Not only are this kids solving the food crisis but they are helping solve specific problems in their grade. This students have noticed that bullying in their grade is prominent and increasing; their goal is to help those who are affected and make school a safer environment for everyone.

“This group will also work as a team to solve other present situations in their grade such as bullying which they have seen increase and they are going to campaign against it.” Vargas said.
