COSMUN Inaguracion, an Evening of Pageantry and Gala

On the evening of April 2, the walls of the Columbus School Upper Elementary Coliseum were filled with a vibrant array of students, teacher, parents and special guest, both local foreign, all meeting here for one reason, the Inauguration ceremony of The Columbus School  Model United Nations (COSMUN).

The Inauguration, set to start at 5:30 pm, the chairs in the coliseum were set, the band was ready and yet many guest were yet to arrive due to traffic on Las Palmas. Guests from other schools in  Colombia and local schools made their way in along with the missing Columbus School students and finally by 6:20 pm the ceremony began.

The Inauguration began with the national anthems of Colombia and USA followed by an inrtoduction by TCS Superintendent Ruth Allen. Her speech higlighted how the Model UN experience provides students with an opportunity to begin considering how to tackle the world problems they will be faced with as adults. These conferences will better prepare students solve environmental and social problems.

Next, Secretary General of COSMU David Franco gave a well recieved speech describing his previous experiences in COSMUN thanking all of those present for allowing and helping COSMUN reached record high attendance of over 500 delegates in 13 commissions.

Finally, speeches were presented by former Medellin mayor Juan Felipe Gaviria who focused on the responsibility of young people to not be content with what we are as a people, a country and the world and that we must as individuals strive to be better even if it takes some painful personal sacrifice. The second speech, by Federico Hoyos, who represented Medellin’s current mayor, focused on how how innovation is the tool that will take us into a better future, encouraging students to take an active part in that process.

The evening ended with a performance by The Columbus School Band and a cocktail reception providing COSMUN delegates and participants an opportunity to mingle with students from other schools, parents and guests.
