Graffiti: Art Through Vandalism

Graffiti should be considered an art because pieces require planning and imagination and contain artistic elements like color and composition. Graffiti gives another vision to  urban landscapes around the world, in latin- america it has managed to resignify the territories. Also, it gave young people a different alternative of art, it should also be noted that graffiti has been a movement of inmoralism, graffiti is not going to save the world it is just another artistic genre like any form of art.

Although many consider the spray-painted pieces vandalism, graffiti has been gaining recognition from the art world more and more as a legitimate form of technique.Artist from around the world have been exposed in multiple museums. Perrograff one of the most popular graffiti artists from Colombia says  “When we talk culturally about graffiti it  may reflect the ethnic identity of different countries and languages ​​of the young”. In short words graffiti is a unique way of art which reveals many cultural aspects.

Talking about local talent in Medellin, the artist Perrograff has committed an immense social work contributing Comuna 13 in Medellin throughout graffiti. Past decades in Comuna 13 were very rough and violent, however nowadays Graffiti Tour has change it all. In brief words, Comuna 13 leaders and gangs have gotten to an ending war, they started to cover the war zone with beautiful graffiti making tourist from around the globe feel completely amazed with the spray-paintings. Not going to far, it change Medellin violent image. This war of art has washed all the bad reputation of Medellin and painted it in colors full of hope and love.

In the other hand, graffiti is also seen as vandalism. They are multiple points that valid this side of the argument, such as people creating graffiti on property without permission, thus leading to arrests, and the connection to vandalism. Property owners all over the world have struggled with the extra cost of having Graffiti removed.  Perrograff said his point of view in reference to graffiti being seen as vandalism, “That is very relative there are those who hate it as there are those who love it but every time there is more acceptance by this movement.”

Getting to an end, Graffiti has a better impact positively than negative. It is just another simple yet realistic way of art. Our world is cover with graffitis, we are getting use to them and believe it or not they are art. When Perrograff was asked, Describe Graffiti in few words he answer this. “Color, life,creativity, astonishment, discipline, passion, and love.” When we think of this words we imagine wonderful and happy things. They are just antonyms of vandalism…
