As teachers adopt technology into their methods, students take advantage by browsing the web or using social media instead of doing their work. This leads to student procrastination in class, which is more noticeable everyday. Students need to be regulated on how they use the internet because if not they will not achieve their potential, reducing their chances to be noticed by high level universities and eventually succeed in their life.

As a solution educational institutions use web filters to block websites that allow distractions.Web filters are programs that check the content and origin of the website to decide whether it should or shouldn’t be displayed in the users’ screens. This programs help securing the network, which will allow it to work at a sustainable rate, facilitating learning and teaching.

Even if schools end up blocking web pages that students use as tools, most of the time there is a positive impact seen from adopting web filtering programs.Despite that, for web filters to be successful, institutions need to learn how to use and not abuse them. By using these web filters students are limited to accessing pages that contain games, video streaming and other distractions that they are comfortable using. With these limits students behave more responsibly and accordingly to their learning environment, which is then reflected on their grades. According to Lois Watson more than 2000 schools around the states have installed web filtering technology on their network.
