Django Unchained: Hollywood Masterpiece

It’s no secret that Quentin Tarantino is the mastermind behind an immense amount of award-winning movies, like Inglorious Basterds, and Pulp Fiction. He is capable of portraying gory, profane, and humorous events in the smoothest ways possible causing the audience to love everything he produces. Fortunately, Django Unchained is no exception to this trend of his, as it shows the best version of Tarantino’s style “on steroids.”

The exceptional team of actors including Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Slave owner Calvin Candie, Christoph Waltz, playing the former dentist turned bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz, Jamie Foxx, who plays the one and only Django, and Samuel L Jackson, being the housekeeper and butler of Mr. Candie, did a stellar job in this 2012 film that still gets a lot of praise six years later. The whole plot revolves around the life of Django, a slave that gets “freed” by Dr. King Schultz, a bounty hunter that immediately connects with him and his story. They both embark on a journey to free Django’s wife, but naturally, they face a lot of problems like in any of Tarantino’s titles. Django’s tenacious personality and Schultz’s artful act allowed this masterpiece to win an Oscar for original screenplay in 2013.

To start off, how can a movie be great without an outstanding plot? Django Unchained is very different from any other movie that’s even remotely similar to the main topic, as it has the Tarantino touch, and offers an extensive amount of turning points throughout the film. When comparing this movie to the many more Tarantino titles, it is evident that none of them has the unproportionate amount of violence and gore this title offers, or the ability to turn a delicate topic, in this case, slavery, and show it without any sort of censorship whatsoever.

Moreover, the magnificent team of actors that make this movie possible is unmatched. Many other films have the possibility to have a group of talented actors on set, but none quite like Django. Ocean’s Eleven also has a ridiculous squad of performers, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, among others. It is tough to compare the amazing group of actors who developed Django to the equally capable squad that played parts in Ocean’s eleven, but Django certainly takes the trophy home in this one. The ability of the movie to connect the actors into one same ideal and mindset is, in my opinion, unique and perfect, the stories each one played are unlike anything else, and the backstories of each character are no match for any other action movie.

On the other hand, Django Unchained has a huge negative that doesn’t allow it to reach that spot among all the best movies in history: it’s too much for some… Too much gore, violence, truth… In the movie industry one has to focus on what the people like, and being able to provide a film that fits into the standards, and is digestible by many people is key to making it stellar. Don’t get me wrong, Django is one of the best-ranked movies in Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, but it is controversial as it is bold. Some people dislike the movie just because they can’t handle the amount of “Tarantino” in it. Pulp Fiction, for instance, doesn’t have the amount of gore and violence Django portrays, so it is able to get into those “top lists” even though many critics argue Jamie Foxx’s title is better. The matter is, would this movie be the same without the unmeasured amount of violence and gore, the bold statements, the Tarantino touches, and every other contradictory thing it oozes? Probably not.

Music also plays an important role in this title. Artists including Jim Croce, Rick Ross, 2Pac, James Brown, and a whole bunch of others make all of the scenes even better with their perfectly fitted soundtracks. What’s not to love about a movie that includes old wild western tracks in between the most stressful scenes? The capability of the soundtrack to merge with the plot and create a delightful experience is unrivaled, quite like the whole Star Wars saga and their famous music.

All in all, Django Unchained is one of the best Quentin Tarantino productions, and for many people, one of the best movies of all time. The amazing group of actors, the prodigious plot, perfectly fitting music, and an endless amount of other qualities make this movie a must watch for all Hollywood fans.
