A World Where Turtles Aren´t Forced To Run

As tough as it gets, a turtle can’t be judged by its lack of speed. Modern day schooling perfectly fits this example because they not only make turtles run all day, but forces them to race against horses.

Schools in Colombia are forced to follow what the ministry of education dictates without any option, schools should be free to develop their own curriculum.

This system is turning students into robots, they are killing creativity  and are preventing them from finding their gifts. Students do the same thing, every day. They arrive to school, listen to the teacher, work on class activities and eventually take papers home to complete them for the next day.  If we compare a modern-day phone with a phone from 150 years ago or a car from today and one from 15 decades ago,  big difference is seen. But if we look on how a class is today and one a 150 years ago, in more than a century, nothing has changed in the educational system. Modern day schooling claim that they are preparing students for the future, but they are simply preparing them for the past.

A curriculum where students are told what to think for 8 straight hours and forced to compete against each other to obtain an “A”, a letter that determines the quality of products, students aren’ t products, they’re human beings.

Every brain is different, students can’t be thought the same way that all do. Doctors can’t prescribe the same medicine for everyone, each individual only requires what goes with its needs. Educational malpractice at it’s best, teachers teach the same thing by the same way being oblivious to the fact that each of them has different brains, strengths, gifts or needs.

The same way that phones,  cars, health care or even twitter pages are customized, then the same thing should be done for education, this can’t be an option, it needs to be an obligation.

The Finnish educational system offers some solutions. First, students are not only encouraged to study subjects they are passionate about, but their interests are given the same importance as traditional subjects like math and science. A curriculum based on shorter days, no homework and collaboration but no competition. The system outperforms any other system that exists because they realized that even though students are 20% of the population, there are 100% of our future.

A world were turtles aren’t forced to run.

The world has progressed and no creation of robots or zombies is needed, there’s a need of students that are creative, innovative, critical and independently so they can finally learn how to connect with a society.
