In a historic move, The Columbus School in Medellin, Colombia, is hosting the first Caribbean International Sports Association (CISA) tournament, fostering cultural exchange and unity among schools from the Caribbean and Colombia.

From April 17th to 20th, the CISA tournament will bring together students in binational volleyball, basketball, and soccer competitions, transcending borders to create lasting connections among diverse cultures in 2024.

“The overall objectives of the CISA tournament are to create bonds with other schools outside of Colombia. It’s an international organization encompassing schools from the Caribbean, promoting cultural exchange through sports,” says Freddy Badillo, The Columbus School’s athletic director.

The planning for this groundbreaking event began at the national athletic directors conference last year, with discussions in February and March laying the foundation for the tournament’s strategic execution.

“We solidified the idea, bringing schools on board for this monumental event,” Badillo said, highlighting the meticulous planning and collaboration involved.

Distinguishing itself from other school sports events, the CISA tournament emphasizes international diversity, providing students with an enriching experience as they interact with different cultures and languages.

“From Haiti to the Dominican Republic to Honduras, our students will interact with different cultures and languages, providing them with a fantastic experience. The event transcends competition; it’s a friendly showcase of something special about our school and Colombia,” Badillo emphasizes.

Beyond showcasing sporting prowess, the CISA tournament aims to put The Columbus School on the global map, positioning it as a pioneer in hosting international competitions in Colombia.

Badillo envisions the school being recognized for something special, solidifying its position as a global hub for fostering international connections through sports.

Anticipating lasting friendships and connections between students from different countries, the CISA tournament aims to become a memorable experience that transcends borders.

“The potential for fostering friendships and connections between students from different countries is one of the most anticipated outcomes of the CISA tournament,” Badillo said.

Looking to the future, Badillo hopes that the legacy of the CISA tournament endures, becoming a cherished tradition that influences and inspires future sports initiatives at The Columbus School.

“I envision the event becoming a cherished tradition, influencing and inspiring future sports initiatives at The Columbus School for generations to come,” Badillo said.

“The Columbus School breaks new ground, uniting nations through sports in the first-ever CISA tournament, setting the stage for a legacy that goes beyond the playing field,” concludes Freddy Badillo, Athletic Director.
