High School Celebrates High Achieving Students

In order to recognize students’ academic achievements, school directives are congratulating those who have excelled academically last quarter.

Jorge Vasquez, NHS Advisor and HS Principal Juan David Lopez  have sent out emails for the first time to those students who have achieved a cumulative GPA over 3 (on a 4 point grade scale) recognizing their hard work and effort.

“The goal is to recognize students who have shown superior academic excellence which I feel as as equally important as helping those who struggle,” Vasquez said.

The idea came up when 10th grade took the MAP test, when Lopez recommended outstanding students should be recognized. The same happened as Q1 came to an end, where students who’s GPA was above 3 were congratulated by the directives.

“Six students had perfect grades, meaning 4 or above (GPA) and 61 emails were sent, with GPA above 3, ” Vasquez said.

He explained that because struggling students  often demand so much attention, teachers and administrators often forget about those who excel at school and this way, can congratulate them. For the first time, the school has decided to congratulate great students and encourage them to continue exceeding expectations.

“I feel great about this new policy the school is doing because it encourages me to keep excelling, it shows that the school pays attention to my hard work,” Isabel Mora, 11th Grade, said.

Isabel Mora, received the congratulating email commented on the importance of it and how she supported the idea, having in mind it could encourage other students to do better for next quarter, and others to keep excelling at every subject. Having in mind her parents happiness upon knowing of her achievements, Susana Gutierrez a parent who received the email expresses herself over the recognition.

“I took a screenshot of the email and sent it through What’s app, congratulating both Isabel and her sister, I felt extremely proud and didn’t expect less, as Isabel has always been an outstanding student,” Gutierrez said.

Once she received the email, she commented she was really proud of her daughter and thought it was a great idea from the school to do so, as it was rewarding hard work, something her daughter always did. She motivated the school to continue encouraging students this way.

“It was about time to empower the good students,” Vasquez said.
