Class Review: AP Calculus AB

Class+Review%3A+AP+Calculus+AB

Taking on the challenge of AP Calculus AB is a significant decision, often motivated by the desire to prepare oneself for the future, especially for those interested in mathematics, and a desire to pursue careers such as engineering or take a challenging course that tests their abilities.

AP Calculus AB is a course that addresses real-life situations instead of just math problems. This course demands strong mathematical foundations, such as algebra and geometry, to be successful. AP Calculus AB is not just about mastering new skills but also applying previously acquired mathematical skills seamlessly.

Students’ primary tools have been Ms. Gabby’s videos, the previous calculus teacher, and the provided worksheets. These worksheets serve as a bridge between theoretical concepts and practical applications, preparing students for their assessments, as the problems in the worksheets are similar to those in the exams.

Students such as Antonia Ramirez, an eleventh-grader, said, “I would take this class again because, even though it is very difficult, I have also learned a lot of useful things.” Moreover, Isabel Mejia, Grade 11 agrees with Ramirez but states, “I wouldn’t take the AP exam,” as there are many concepts, and Mejia took this course to have a strong foundation in math concepts she might see in college.

The most prominent challenge faced by students in this course is applying information from previous math classes, like geometry, to real-life situations. Additionally, the hardest topic they have seen so far is optimization. Hopefully, there are several strategies to overcome these challenges, such as homework completion, video watching, and tutoring, which have become an essential part of students’ routines, taking them several hours a day.

The material used for this class is a binder; if you have an iPad or similar electronic device, you do not need one. This way, you will be able to store your class worksheets. You should also have a pen, pencil, sharpener, and eraser. Furthermore, the teacher, Mr. Bradford, is very attentive to his students, helping them when they do not understand a topic.

Students would recommend these classes to future students who want to pursue a career in math. This course goes beyond mathematical content, developing a problem-solving mindset that students can apply to various aspects of life.

In conclusion, taking AP Calculus AB is a rigorous yet rewarding experience. The challenges are diverse, requiring a varied approach to learning. While the journey is demanding, the skills acquired and the intellectual growth make it a beneficial course for students interested in mathematical subjects.
