  • The NHS group at our high school is putting together candy grams and serenades for all the students. Its a tradition during Valentines Day week where NHS students make candygrams and sell them so anyone can give them to whoever they want. Serenades are also a long-standing tradition here. We enjoy doing this. Its hilarious to see how people react when they receive candygrams and serenades from someone unexpected, Eva Morales, one of the NHS participants, said.

Balancing Sports and Academics

Balancing+Sports+and+Academics

TCS Senior Tomas Galeano and Sophomore Amalia Hinestroza begin their daily schedule of balancing sports training with the rigors of academic life. These student-athletes mark the essence of dedication and discipline, navigating a delicate balance between the tennis/basketball court and the classroom with immense determination. Galeano, starts his day, lacing up his basketball shoes as he prepares for another intense training session. Meanwhile, Amalia Hinestroza hits the tennis courts.

It is a challenge to uncover the daily challenges faced by Galeano and Hinestroza, such as exploring the strategies they employ to excel both on and off the field. Through their stories, they gain insights into their sacrifices, the support systems they rely on, and the lessons they have learned along the way.

“I choose to prioritize my sport over my academics, however, I make sure everything is done, and sometimes I need to ask for extensions, but I make sure to be responsible and use my class time effectively,” Galeano said.

Galeano and Hinestroza have faced moments when their dedication to their sport conflicted with their academic commitments. From navigating tight deadlines to seeking support from teachers and coaches, they share their strategies for overcoming obstacles and staying on track.

“What I would tell them is that there has to be focus on both things, but they need to stay focused on what they like to do because if they really like the sport then that will bring them calmness and happiness, and that will help you with your academics to learn and be more effective,” Galeano said.

Through their experiences as student-athletes, they have gained insights and skills that extend beyond the court and the classroom. They discuss the importance of resilience, discipline, and teamwork in both sports and academics, offering advice to aspiring student-athletes.

“Whenever I face setbacks, I remind myself of my long-term goals and the progress I’ve made so far. I stay positive and focus on what I can control, pushing myself to keep moving forward,” Hinestroza said.

Galeano and Hinestroza’s days are packed from sunrise to sunset, with training sessions, classes, and study sessions filling their schedules. They explore the careful planning and time management needed to balance their intense and time-consuming sports with academic commitments.

“Through the challenges of balancing sports and academics, I’ve learned that dedication knows no bounds, and with perseverance, anything is possible,” Hinestroza, said.
