The Water Bottle Trend

As he felt his throat getting dryer, his respiration increasing and his muscles tensing, Pedro looked at his backpack hopping he’d find a water bottle inside. Rushing through his papers and pencils he had no luck. As he looked up, he saw Daniela across the room with her purple water bottle. As he jumped from his chair and sprinted down the class grabbed Daniela’s water and he gulped the rest of the water left. He learned how crucial it’s to bring a water bottle to school and how ridiculous he’d been by not doing so.

Staying hydrated throughout the 8 hour school day is crucial for not only students, but also for staff and maintenance members.

Girls and water bottles

No matter if a girl is sporty, fashionable,  or somewhere in between, at TCS, nearly every girl takes a water bottle to school. Through many years the school’s programs have emphasized on how bringing a water bottle to school will help us not only to stay hydrated, but also to improve our body functions with repercussions on our health like blood pressure levels and digestion. The true mystery is: why do more girls instead of boys tend to bring their water bottle to school daily? This has become a trend, just like mac computers and the wearing the school PE uniform daily.

“I’ve noticed how every girl brings a water bottle to school, I think is like a fashion thing like who has the prettiest water bottle,” said Luciano Fernandez, sophomore at TCS.

There’s a clear pattern of how girls bring their water bottles, yet if you look closely not all of them contain water inside of them. Inside a girl’s water bottle you may find herbs (such as mint), fruits, protein, soda, tea or clight. Some girls, few to none, don’t like to bring their water bottle daily to school; while the majority, no matter what, carry their water bottle everywear.

“Its crazy! They have all kinds of things inside them, like fruit or wierd plants. In my case I only have normal water,” said Fernandez.

And what about the Boys?

TCS boys are most likely to buy their own water in the school. For them it’s easier, they don’t need to carry a water bottle everywear, they don’t easily misplace it and they can simply just throw it away later.

“Boys are just lazy and prefer to buy than than lose them all the time, my brother has lost so many water bottles by leaving them around he preferred to stick to buying a bottle or using the fountains, ” said Antonia Berdugo, Sophomore at TCS.

Some boys even like the girl’s water too. Instead of buying their own or bringing a water bottle, they drink water from their girlfriends’ bottle. But  don’t think that all boys do this; in fact, some boys regularly bring their bottles to school and they like doing so. Bottles at school aren’t an exclusive girl trend; boys can and have already become a part of it.

“Boys are much lazier and find water bottles boring, so they prefer to ask for water from a friend or simply buy some water in the cafeteria,” said Maria Jose Rico, Junior at TCS.

It’s not like boys don’t want to stay hydrated, their main reason not to bring carry a water bottle is basically laziness.

Fit, hydration or eco friendly?

There are many reasons for one to bring a water bottle to school. They variate from staying hydrated to being fit and healthy, it all depends on the person. Some water bottles in school, as previously stated, have fruit or herbs to make water taste better, and this way drink it to stay hydrated; on the other hand, fitness people put protein in their water!

“I focus on my body and my health, that’s why I bring a big water bottle and vanilla protein to mix it with. After I wear off my muscle the nutritionist send me to take protein twice a day, so by bringing it to school I’m being healthy and helping my body to recover,” said Maria Antonia Obando, Junior at TCS.

Looking at hydration from a health perspective it’s crucial to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. Since students spend most of their day in school, it´s no surprise that much of this water will be drunk at school, whether it’s from buying or bringing water from home.

“They’ve always told us that water is super healthy, and that if you drink water you will minimize the risk of getting many things in your body,” said Rico.

No matter the additional reasons that students drink water in school, a 93% do this just to keep themselves hydrated and healthy. By bringing a water bottle or buying water in school, students are taking care of their body by keeping themselves hydrated.

Water refill

Through TCS’ campus there are water fountains which permit students to either drink directly, or refill their water bottles. This is a spectacular help to keep and promote the students to keep themselves hydrated. It’s medically proven that in order for students to focus and learn better, they need to stay hydrated and with a full stomach.

“When kids are hydrated, they perform better and focus better. There is some documentation that if kids are hydrated, they perform on tests better, ” said Jane Bluestein, author of Creating Emotionally Safe Schools.

Students, staff and maintenance are using these water fountains in a daily basis, showing how they’re truly effective and valuable for school. They not only improved hydration but also eco friendliness in school, this encourages students to drink water and at the same time safe money and the world.

“It’s really easy to refill a water bottle around school, so this encourage everyone to bring their own and safe the world,” said Rico

Bringing a water bottle to school is a bigger trend for girls than for boys. But no matter the gender, students show to care for their hydration and want to make an eco friendly environment in school.
