A Fifth Grade Tradition, an Influence for The Columbus School

Behavior, attitude, academics, and many others are the qualities that a student must have in order to receive “The Tiger Award”.

This recognition started in fifth grade during 2012. To know more about it, Erin Beyer, a 5th grade teacher and Sebastian Garces 2012 prize winner gave us an insight.

¨The tiger award is awarded to a fifth grade student in every class section for overall performance.” Fifth grade teacher, Erin Beyer explained.

This award is not just affecting the ones who earned it, it is also a push and a motivation for all of the students in the grade, making them take out their potential on this challenge.

“It is really important that students are awarded with this kind of recognition because it creates an incentive for them to make part of the Top Students.” Sebastian Garces described.

This prize make students give everything they have and exceed expectations to become top students.

“This represents how persistence students must be, in their behavior and academically.” The teacher expressed.

This recognition is a clear evidence that there is much more than just being the best in math; it is as important being disciplined, showing effort and being respectful to everyone.

“I am good at math but probably not the best, I think my other attributes also contributed for my winning of this prize ” Garces explained.

In 5th grade students may think soccer is more important than school, this recognition is showing students since a young age how important school is.

“It’s always good being recognized in your talent, it doesn’t matter which one is yours.” Former winner said.

It’s not easy for the teachers to decide who will get it, but when the time comes they should have really clear what students deserve it.

“At the end of the school year, the entire fifth grade teachers gather up to choose the students that will be awarded and they found out at the fifth grade graduation.” Erin communicated.

The reason why this is so representative in 5th grade is not only because it started there, but because even though it is a lower year in school it has influenced the senior grades in each of the upper schools.

“We as students, believe that this creates an incentive for us to achieve our maximum potential.” – Sebastian concluded, and it sure does.
