Water and Resources in La Guajira

There  is a crisis that is happening right now in la Guajira, Colombia. La Guajira once used to be one of the wealthiest departments in Colombia but now its a place where there’s a lot of water scarcity and food scarcity and where everything is getting contaminated because of El Cerrejon which is a carbon mine. Because there are so many people in need of resources there are more people dying because of all the poverty and what is happening. In the region, one can see a lot of trash on the ground which is contamination. We can also see Wayuus,  which is the indigenous tribe of the northern Guajira, picking up water from wells because the rivers they previously used are threatened. Some river water is contaminated because of mining activities, and it is scarce because the region is dry and because the local coal mine reroutes the rivers for mining. So, in the water that is left, we can see that is really dirty and if they drink that they could probably get sick and potentially die. We can also that they have containers were they store the water and those little kids, and families that collect water have to carry that water all the way to their homes and probably which  is a very long walk. Some ways to help this issue are helping to finance water being brought to the communities in the short term. We can also help construct wells in communities so families do not have to walk so far. That will also help the kids and teens to get an education since they spend so much time walking for water.
