Maintain Wayuu Culture

La Guajira is a very beautiful place in Colombia. But, it is being destroyed. In this entry there is a photo of El Cerrejon, which is a mine that is one of the biggest open coal mines in the world. One issue with this is that it is destroying the economy of the Wayuu tribe of La Guajira which was based on agriculture. Now, all of the water is going to the mine, the rivers are being rerouted to the mine because to have the coal under control they need a lot of water.  Also, there is a lot of corruption from the government to the Wayuu people. The money is not being invested into Wayuu communities although we know that the government or politicians receive financial benefits from the mine. One solution to this problem could be that they should change the government’s politicians, so that there is not so much corruption. It is important to have someone in the government that really cares about the Wayuu. It would also be a good idea to teach and train the Wayuu people to maintain their culture while learning to engage in politics so that in the future we could see more Wayuu people serving in the government and helping their communities.
