Economic Diversification

When you see this picture what do you see?  Maybe poor kids or just kids with less resources that go around their home with no shoes and with very little clothes. This is  because they can’t afford really good clothes due to an economic crisis caused by a shift in how people work. This is a problem in La Guajira because it has become normal for the people there to be poor and to not have economic stability because they depend on tourism instead of what the La Guajira produces. This is because the government is focusing more on how other countries profit on La Guajira, for example the mine El Cerrejon exports all the coal, and  almost 90% of their earnings go to other countries leaving the minority of the earnings to all Colombia. This mine doesn’t only affect Guajira’s economy, it also affects the environmental stability of the region because the way they extract the coal kills the animals habitat and puts toxins into the air that kill the ecosystem. Furthermore, poisonous chemicals have entered the water supply which is already scarce.

For the people of La Guajira  it is very hard to get money because their agricultural economy was cut when trade with Venezuela was discontinued because many of the people of La Guajira went to Venezuela sell and trade. When this occurred the products that arrive are now part of a black market. This has created an increase in criminal activity, moral corruption, and a lack of stability. The region is forgotten by the government so a very low number of  supplies go to Guajira. Causing people starve to death and to have only the essentials to survive with a poorly built house. La Guajira is a forgotten place by the government with an unstable economy with a percent of unemployment that is very high so many of the people there are starving because the government is giving them low attention.

This can be fixed by giving more resources to the Guajira and more jobs so the economy grows to be stable. This requires more morality among those who are engaging in black market activities. The locals could increase the tourism sector without totally depending on it in order to create jobs. Another thing that La Guajira can do is stabilize water through purifications systems so that the people can be healthy, and so that agriculture can contribute to the economy again through leather, meat, and vegetables. This also requires the government starting to pay attention to Guajira and making it a priority, and redirecting coal profits and mining jobs back into Guajira to increase financial sustainability.
