Unfair Changes at TCS

Lately, TCS is making new changes without considering the effects of the change and the importance of parents and students´ opinions regarding those changes. Not only have they’ve been leaving out members of the TCS community and their opinions, but the administration has not been totally honest when it comes to making changes in the school.

To start with, TCS prohibited the sale of sodas with the excuse that they were just trying to become greener, but it was a hard change to adapt to for parents and students. Later on, they banished the sale of specifically plastic water bottles without considering both students health and their opinions. According to FDA and EPA regulations, studies have shown that bottled water is much healthier than treated water. Bottled water comes from natural springs and involves no chlorine or in some cases only a small amount. Treated water from sinks go through a pipe system, can collect bacteria and metallic flavors, plus it contains a great amount of chlorine. TCS clearly didn’t consider these health issues.

And yet another change was made just a couple of weeks ago; students came back from vacations to a big surprise, which not surprisingly, never included the students´opinions. They limited the number of devices that could access wifi per student, which complicated students and parents lives making them angrier at the school. “I have heard stories about my daughter being late to an assignment or late to an exam or having to wait in class for not connecting or having problems with the portal,” stated Angela Orozco, a TCS mother, while looking really uncomfortable.

Not only did the school changed the wifi system, but when it comes to the reasons, they left behind information that might be important for students to know. “If student A is being targeted by student B the school can see the address of student B and see what platform is using. In relative short terms yes they are being tracked and I think that is an issue because students don’t know this,” said Agustin Jaramillo, TCS 11th grader. Jaramillo has been working with the internet tech department to improve the system, but instead, he found out information that the school doesn’t give to the students or the parents.

The way the school has been handling changes and the fact that parents have no knowledge of these changes has been bothering a lot of parents since they want their opinions to be considered. Angela Orozco, Angela Velasquez and Eileen Peak (three mothers from the school who are really uncomfortable with the way TCS makes decisions regarding their kids) had unpleasant things to say. “I don’t agree with the way TCS makes decisions; they don’t ask us about anything and we are the ones choosing TCS for our children so I don’t think they are fair when making changes,” Velasquez stated. “I don’t understand how can a private school regulate and limit WiFi meanwhile around the world free WiFi spots are increasing… and I think parents opinions should be considered because it is our kids’ life and education that we are talking about,” Peak stated. “I do believe that our opinion should be considered like they have parent associations at the school why have them if they don’t take into consideration our opinions which affect our children; I believe parent opinion should come first,” Orozco said. As members of an expensive private school, parents believe the school is really unfair when it comes to making changes in their children’s lives.
