Uber or Taxi?
The taxi industry protest continues in Bogota due to the lack of response from the Superintendent of Industry and Commerce regarding the lawsuit against Uber and Cabify.
As of October 23rd, taxis have been partially blocking some of the most important streets of the Capital city in protest against Uber and Cabify.
These two companies, that use technology to disrupt the transportation guild in Colombia, are now being criticized and even attacked by taxi drivers who have declared it undesired and unlawful.
“It is reasonable for them (taxi drivers) to protest because I’ve heard they have to pay some taxes that Uber doesn’t. But, at the same time the more they protest the less money they are making and the more they are encouraging the use of other ways of transportation such as Uber or walking,” said Samuel Villegas TCS 11th grader when asked about the protests in Bogota.
Villegas went on to state that he clearly prefers Uber over a taxi or Cabify because he has had bad experiences with taxi drivers before.
“It’s basically showing the consumers that all the taxi drivers care about is their own life and their own money. If anything, it’s giving more credibility to people taking Uber and finding that cheaper, better option,” said TCS Economics teacher Brian Summers, when asked about the message these protests send to the public eye.
Summers then went on to agree with Villegas that as a user, Uber is better than riding a taxi.
“It’s not like taxi drivers are doing it because they are polite and diplomatic. They just got competition and are making less money; that’s why they want to get rid of [Uber}”, said Tomas Mejia TCS 11th grader.
