Theater Festival Slated for May
The 4th Film and Theater Festival will return to the TCS Theater last week of May, presenting the play Cuando sea grande quiero ser un niño.
2nd to 12th grade students who want to practice theatre as an extracurricular can sign up at https://app.columbus.edu.co/app/. Students will audition in order to be cast in the play with the intention of encouraging theatre in the school.
“It is very fun for someone who likes theater of course, and it’s something you won’t forget,” Maia Gallón Muñoz, Grade 9, said.
Cuando sea grande quiero ser un niño by Bordet, Sophie, Mouchet and Nadine is an audiovisual play that shows what would happen if the world comes to an end. This dramatic and risky future forces the characters to search for a way to survive.
“The show deals with what would happen if the planet is at risk, who would we save, how would we do it and the hope is always in children, in young people,” Martha Vargas, festival director, said.
The final play will be the conclusion in which the students mastered essential acting skills such as the creation of a character, body language, facial expression and vocal techniques that would lead them to improve the act.
“The theatre opens up many worlds that even you don’t know about yourself. The theatre is a game, I am going to play to be another person. The theater brings out of you other things that you are capable of doing,” Vargas said.
The inscription process will consist of an audition in which participants will compete for a chance to participate in the event. However, due to the lack of participants of this year’s event, former actors may eventually be called to participate in order to play the missing characters.
“As the process advances, the cast of who are the protagonists and the secondary characters is chosen, also depending on the time they have to dedicate to their character,” Vargas said.
Due to the biosecurity protocols, the theatre will limit the size of the audience. Instead of an invited group, The Columbus School made an agreement with the department of audiovisual of La Universidad de Medellín who will film the play extending the festival to a wider audience.
“Maybe if it takes place, let’s hope so, we will have to do several performances because the entire theater cannot be filled. This requires us to have a better execution and play,” Vargas said.
Previous festivals have required a lot of preparation. That is the main reason why it has had a very successful impact in school which even sold out the presale, increasing the hopes of popularity for this year’s show.
“There was a lot of preparation and they made sure we all knew the dance. We’ve been rehearsing for months. It was very fun, but a very intense activity to do after school. And I’m glad I did it because it was interesting,” Juan Lorenzo Gutierrez, Grade 11, said.
