The Dark Side of a Relationship
Getting into a serious relationship while in High School can be a bit tricky. High school is the moment when you get to know people and discover adult life, this is why so many teenagers are not ready to share their heart and their feelings with another person. Relationships in High School can be a lot of fun and a source of great memories, but they also come with a number of disadvantages that students need to be aware of.
High School is an exciting time of life that is full of adventure, self-discovery, and personal growth. Many students see it as a time to date and explore different types of relationships, hoping to find that special someone who will be there for them. They just think about all the good experiences they can go through during that lovely period of time. However, some of the downfalls include; mental health struggles due to the emotional roller coasters, dropping academic performance because you can’t find time to do your work or simply spending all your money on your partner.
“I feel that we are too young for that double of commitment. We are still teenagers trying to survive life in High School! Especially guys, they take longer to develop and mature enough for a serious relationship,” Senior Helena Hoyos said.
One of the biggest dangers of being in a relationship is the risk of breaking up, especially if you are in High School. Relationships in High School are often founded on young love and physical attraction, which are not always strong enough reasons to overcome the challenges of growing up.
As students grow up and develop new interests, they may find that they no longer have much in common with their partner, and this can lead to a breakup. The end of a relationship in High School can be extremely painful and can leave students feeling lost and alone.
In addition, breaking up can also impact social standing, since students often form relationships within their social groups, and breaking up can lead to being excluded from that group. This can cause students to feel like they are not part of the social event and can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.
“One of the downsides of being in a relationship could also be that when you are really in love and you break up, it would be very hard for you because there was a lot of time, emotion, and feelings put into that relationship,” Alejandro Gómez, Grade 10, said.
Another downside is dropping academic performance and suffering from poor time management because. Time management in school is complicated to learn; students have a lot of homework. Imagine having a partner and instead of studying and doing homework, you are spending time consenting to yourself. Couples do not have time because they are all day long together. Time management in a relationship in High School is crucial for maintaining a healthy and balanced life. Balancing homework, extracurricular activities, and time with your significant other can be challenging. It is important to set good quality time for your relationship.
“Having a relationship is very time-consuming because you have to have time for her and accompany her throughout hardships. You also have to cut time with like things you need you like to do like playing basketball for me or being with your friends,” Gomez said.
The economy in a relationship is a pretty big problem this is why relations have problems talking about who pays. According to one study, over 25% of all have ended a relationship over money issues. 15% of women report the same. One solution is making an effective financial plan that helps the relationship stays healthy, students in relationships may need to budget their money and prioritize their spending, this could include cutting back on unnecessary expenses and finding creative ways to have fun together that don’t cost much money.
It’s also important to have open and honest conversations with your partner about finances, set realistic expectations, and not let your couple pay everything make sure to be equal to the payment. For example, if one partner feels like they are always the one footing the bill for dates and gifts, it can create feelings of frustration and unfairness. If one partner is spending money like crazy and not considering the other person’s financial situation, it can also lead to conflict. In some cases, these financial issues can be the final step to lead to a breakup.
“For me, this is a controversial topic but I think that having a relationship at this moment it’s very soon and for me having a relationship has a lot of cons and not so many pros at this age,” Hoyos said.
