School Choir Excells at Family Day Performance

The new Columbus School choir performed their new repertoire on the main stage at the school’s 70th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, February 25.

The choir performed four songs, including a rap version of Caraluna, that was well recieved by the crowd of Columbus School alumni, families, students and teacher.

“We have been preparing this presentation since January, we have been working on two new songs, Cumpleaños Feliz from Diomedes Diaz and En Marcha Estoy by Phil Collins,” Valentina Urrea, 12th grade choir participant, said.

The Columbus School High School choir is a new elective and the group has only been working together this school year. The choir is directed by Columbus School music teacher Carlos Julian Fernandez.

¨I think it is a great opportunity because it attempts to get out each ones specific strength with the schools support and when I was in school options were very closed.¨ Liliana Lopez, Columbus School graduate and current K-4 teacher, said.

The choir has met four times a week since August, and have prepared for this performance since January, including extra sessions.

“We are 13 students in the class and Carlos divided us into three different groups according to our tone of voice. Altos, who are the 4 girls, bajos 5 of boys and tenors 4 boys,” said Valentina Urrea, 12th grade participant.

Attendees appeared to enjoy the event and showed support to the band and choir performance by clapping and singing along and cheering at the end of the performance.

¨I wish I was a Columbus School graduate. The opportunities here are endless and I really like the activities and events. For example the choir and band excelled,¨ Catalina Gomez, wife of alumnus Carlos Restrepo, said.

The Columbus School has a tradition of producing graduates who go on to successful careers in the entertainment industry.

¨The school has alumni that pursued and were successful in their creative careers, like Mariana Tobon and Lucas Arnau, it would be great that the school choir and band helped students find their passion and pursue it whatever that is because they are very talented,¨ Diana Agudelo, Columbus School graduate, said.

The school has grown its creative arts curriculum and now allows students more choices to be involved and prepared for what they wish to pursue after graduation.

¨I like that I have seen the school grow and improve over the years, now people can highlight their talents and show them with the schools support,¨said Lopez.
