Repercussions of Mass School Shooting
The post-shooting casualties after Parkland’s high school mass murder revealed multiple missing warnings that in a reciprocal case would have potentially prevented the event. Law enforcement, public records, criticism and the other authorities revolving the case have been attacked relentlessly since the shooting.
The infamous Parkland High School’s school shooting that took place the past February 14, was orchestrated by one of their own students, Nikolas Cruz, one that reportedly claimed 17 victims. After an ongoing investigation took place, records revealed that the Cruz family had called the Broward County Sheriff’s office more than 30 times over a six-year period because of cases involving the killer.
After inaccurately describing the amount of calls as visits, the log showed a total of 45 calls made from the family of the shooter to the station. People are now wondering why would they miss the warnings from a troubled kid.
“I think it was terrible, something that shook the nation. It was something that was very unexpected…People didn’t take mental illness as something serious,” said Andrea Fernandez, an 11th grade TCS student, who previously lived in Florida and was supposed to go to Parkland high school.
The repercussions of the shooting have involved things like strikes, marches, and pleading from all students to enforce gun control, ones that until now haven’t been taken into account by the government.
“It hit really close to home; my friends were in there. That’s why I think it’s so personal because that would’ve been my high school. I know teachers from there, (and) my friends where inside the building,” said Fernandez in the attempt of showing her closer perspective to the unfortunate event.
Now, as an potential solution, the government has stated that guns will now be provided to teachers and other educators with the aspiration of preventing further attacks within schools, but not everybody is content.
“I don’t agree; I think that people who chose to be teachers don’t necessarily agree with guns or have the ability to use them with responsibility,” said Ana Isabel Garcia TCS’s school counselor. “I think that if you want to limit the violence in school, by arming the teachers you are, on the contrary, creating an effect of increasing the risk of having more shootings because more people have guns.”
The students throughout the nation are desperately fighting the possibility of future school shooting during Cruz’s trial. Florida Speaker of the House Richard Corcoran, wrote a letter to the governor implying “failures to intervene” with Nikolas Cruz that are, as he reportedly said, “unacceptable and unforgivable.”
“I believe that it’s about the regulation. I think it’s all related to the education; people should be raised knowing different ways to handle problems and emotions that do not originate from violence,” said Garcia.
