Indian Rapists Claim Another Victim
After allegedly being gang-raped, a teenage girl in India was set ablaze just a few days after a similar attack was carried out against another 16-year-old in the same state.
With over 70% of the 17-year-old victim’s body burned, she was taken to the hospital in the search of urgent treatment. The stated attack was believed to have happened in a relative’s house when the rapist, someone she knew, came and abused her before setting her on fire, all before the the neighbors heard her cries and screams that alerted them to her rescue.
“It’s inhumane, I truly don’t understand in what condition can people actually think it’s okay. First of all, raping them it’s an invasion of their privacy, dignity, of something that is so personal to them, and second, they’re committing a crime. I don’t understand how this is seen as acceptable now that their not taking measures” Said Tatiana Botero a TCS 11th grade student.
Even though rape is illegal by law in almost all countries, in India specifically, marital rape is not a crime, something that has earned the nation the tolerant label regarding women’s rights.
“Why are this women receiving this type of punishment (treatment),” Said Sofia Niño anther TCS student, “I think that cases can be out of pure evil in singular cases, maybe just one woman and a psychopath, but knowing it’s the second one, it can be a trend, it has to have a reasoning behind it.”
Since the community started to notice the repetitive attacks, protests have been rising in order to make sure that amnesty is not an option for the attackers now that, allegedly, the village council sentenced the accusers to 100 situps and imposed a fine of 50,000 rupees or $750.
“The first reported attack in Jharkhand took place on Friday, when a 16-year-old girl died after she was burned to death for going to authorities to report being gang-raped, investigators said. Authorities believe the teenager was kidnapped from her rural home Thursday night, while her family was at a wedding, and raped in a nearby forest,” Reported the CNN article on the event.
India is considered one of the most affected countries regarding sexual assaults. Around 100 sexual abuses are reported every day, concluding a data of 39,000 alleged attacks throughout 2016 and has reportedly been increasing since.
“I think it comes from a cultural background, in which culture in those types of countries don’t respect women which is why they have been able to do this type of acts. Women are humans too, I think it’s a bigger issue than just them wanting to do it, It comes from a bigger problem that is a government that is allowing it and a (big part of) society that doesn’t care.” Said Botero.
