IAEA Debates use of Nuclear Technology for Medical Use

On Tuesday, April 4, the IAEA committee opened with the explanation of position papers, working with their ally countries in a non- moderated caucus.

The delegates presented their position and working papers to the presidents and other commissions members. Each group debated their opinions and beliefs, and decided what paper to pass. The delegations proceeded to introduce the second topic of the committee: Applications of Nuclear Energy in Medicine, and presented their positions papers to the committee.

Most delegations referred to the applications of nuclear energy in medicine, as positive to everyone, even though it may cause major problems if not controlled properly.

“The radiology is a constant used method in modern medicine, it has several areas of actions, such as: cancer, broken bones, mammography, tomography, and cardiology. The usage of this method with radioactive material,” the delegation from Iran said. “If the exposure of radiation is not controlled it can cause severe severe damages to the body,”

As the debate began, the delegates argued  over the benefits of nuclear power. The delegate from the Holy See opened the discussion by stating that delegations who disagree with the standard position on radiation for medical use, should begin the discussion.

“The radiation is very important and also vital,” The delegation from The Netherlands said.

As the debate continued, more than half of the committee agreed about the use of radiation in medicine and said it was a very delicate and important topic, which would highly affect society. However, delegates also emphasised that this method was not well developed yet, making it very risky.

“The medicine radiation is the future,” the delegation from United States of America said.

“This type of  medicine is well not developed and it is very risky,” the delegation from Israel said.

The committee concluded by establishing an agreement for the usage of radiation and nuclear power in medicine.
