GIN’s New Projects This Year

The remodeling of the TCS greenhouse, led by five GIN members this school year, demonstrates how the Eco-lumbus project is going to be re-organized to achieve greater results.

The greenhouse presented some problems last year, for the wood used for the planters was damaged and began rotting, which proved to be unsafe to continue harvests. However, the GIN members in charge did a great job at finding a solution.

“We are going to remodel the greenhouse because the old one had rotten wood; therefore, the beds were falling and it was unsafe,” Juliana Aristizabal, 10th-grade member of GIN, said.

GIN members are planning every aspect of the remodeling plan with the help of two teachers, hoping the process will start soon. They’re also talking to the school’s maintenance team, which has an important role in the preservation of the greenhouse.

“Right now we are just starting to talk to maintenance. Our teacher Ms. Mccarthy is talking to the head of maintenance so we can have a meeting and show them our plans so we can start soon,” Aristizabal, said .

With the help of staff members, the GIN team has designed new plans for the renovation, including precautions for future issues they might face.

“We decided to make it on a bed but with flowering pots, so we can easily move them,” Aristizabal, said.

This year it is essential to be prepared and organized in order to make repairs successful and, most importantly, create a long-lasting solution.

“GIN is going to be every Tuesday, so it is going to be more organized and better for the school,” Camila Ceballos, 10th-grade student, said.

The GIN team is aware of the importance of sustainability, and implement it in the management of the greenhouse. By doing this, they ensure it will continue running without major difficulties.

“We are a completely sustainable team. The money that we get from harvesting we invest in new seeds. Last year, we made sure to only buy necessary things in order to save and be able to remodel this year,” Aristizabal said.
