COSMUN: Columbus School Monster United Nations

Presidents being reassigned last minute, food for the delegates arriving cold or not arriving at all, Students left without supervision, and much more. Welcome to COSMUN.

COSMUN is the Model United Nations here at The Columbus School, and it has always been an event to showcase the critical thinking and debating skills the students possess. This year, however, it was a different story.

“This school was a complete disaster while COSMUN took place,” claimed junior student Tomas Moreno “there were several classes where neither a teacher nor a substitute showed up. When a substitue did show up, we didn’t do much. If you wanted to go to the cafeteria they would give you a pass, no questions asked. We pretty much had eleven free blocks that week.”

Several sources confirmed that the week of COSMUN, there was little authority in the rest of the School. Multiple people explained that they didn’t work at all in some classes, some were left without supervision for entire blocks, and in one case two substitutes showed up to the same class.

“This year COSMUN was a complete let down in terms of logistics,” expressed Junior student Simon Giraldo.  “The daily news show seemed very amateurishly made and missed some of the most basic points it should have. They forgot to show an entire committee, they didn’t upload pictures of an entire committee and just didn’t to a good job in general.”

During COSMUN, a daily news show was played which highlighted the most important aspects of each committee’s debate, but time and time again it showed the lack of preparation from the presenters and the editors as they were constantly leaving out crucial information and, in one case, didn’t talk about UNODC, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime one of the biggest committees COSMUN at all.

“The second day when we went out to eat, I was really pumped because the food was supposed to be delicious [cheese sticks], but they ended up being ice cold,” said COSMUN president and sophomore student Santiago Urrea. “Also, the food in general wasn’t of good quality, like one day it was supposed to be hamburger, but I didn’t really enjoy it.”

The food in COSMUN was a big logistical failure, as the food would arrive cold, or not at all. There was a food truck from a small ice cream business “Espiral Bajo Cero”, which had its own repertoire of problems.

“This year’s COSMUN was a let down, logistics were pretty incompetent and didn’t get much done, I hope next year we have much better and complete COSMUN package. ” said President Ricardo Perez “We’re counting on you Manu!”
