Being stopped by the police: A frequent problem in our community

The first time Alejandro Gomez was stopped he was barely 16 years old and he was driving through Palmas at a very late hour, his first feeling was fear since it was the first time that he was stopped and he didn’t know how to act. As he approached to the policeman, he thought about what to say and how to act. Without any experience Gomez managed to establish an excellent relationship with the policeman and even managed to get his phone number all due to his excellent human and social skills.

Many people know that Alejandro Gomez a TCS junior, is great at talking to people and persuading them on his favor, he is a great social person and part of this happens because he acts as an adult. Due to this and his large experience of dealing with the police he has become an expert on how you should act and what you should say if you ever get caught in that situation. That’s why he has a couple tips which are the following

What you should do

The first things you should do if you ever get stopped  by the cops, is to be calm and never rush things, you should just let them do it at their pace.

“If you rush things it will be worse for you since the officers might notice that you are hiding something and may do an extra search,” Gomez said.

Other thing that you should have in mind is to always do as they say so when they tell you to; never avoid something and always be the nicest person on earth.

“You should always be very careful on what to say but you should always respond to them, and right when they tell you to because they might notice that you are lying; also if you are nice they would always try to help you; it has worked for me to the point that I have some police phone numbers in my contacts,” Gomez added.

When you are being stopped by the police you should always be alert and if they try to search your car, you should always check what they are doing, because not all cops are good.

“If you get stopped, you need to have your six sense on; never leave the officers alone with your car for even a minute; you should always be nice to them and give them the reason, but don’t let them take you by a fool,” Gomez added.

Gomez has become so known for his ability to talk through cops that he even saved many students from being sanctioned by the police; this was the case of Julian Jaramillo another TCS junior.

“ We were once stopped and I was really scared, thankfully I was Alejo, and he had already been stopped many times so he had experince. I had some trouble with the car papers, so the officer was getting us into trouble, but Alejo applied his great social skills. He was just nice to them and talked them through, and he got us out of there with only a warning,” Jaramillo said.

What not to do

There are people that act really well, in these situations, but there are other that have no idea on what to do and most of the times that they get stopped. They end up in a bad situation, this is the case of the other TCS junior Samuel Vieira. All of the times that this student has been stopped  by the police he has ended in a terrible position.

For starters, he was rude to the policemen and he told them that he actually knew more about the law than them. “I knew that I was in the streets after the curfew for minors at that respective zone, but the officer didn’t knew nothing and so I tried to convince him about it.”

Samuel acted in the opposite way as you are supposed to act when stopped by the law; he was rude, and he thought he knew more about the law, even though the officer were right, and he was actually doing something wrong.

Samuel got the officer angry and they had him and very rough position. Just because he couldn’t act as normal person, but when asked he said that he would act just the way he did if he had the chance. “I know the law better and for that I would act exactly the same,” Viera said.

Taking this last example as guide you should always know that you should never be rude to them and never say that you are smarter than them, and as Alejandro Gomez and Julian Jaramillo said, “always be the nicest person on earth.”
