3rd Grade Teachers Welcome the New Homework Policy

The past is irreversible, what is done is done. That’s why passing by your childhood doing homework is not an option.

In elementary at The Columbus School they created a solution to this problem, called the no homework policy; this policy assures that the kids leave a unique and creative childhood. Teachers debated wether or not this solution would really work.

“You know, they are here very late, some kids are going when I am going home, at 4:30 pm; its very late for a little kid going home …When they get home is 5:30pm, they get dinner until 6:30 pm, so that leaves them like an hour and a half to be a child in a hole they, so I think is very important they can spend that time reading with their family loving life… I think is a great decision.”  Said Tai Linsay Bainter, a 3rd grade teacher.

Plenty of research was made before making this decision, teachers looked at several references to make sure that it was a correct decision.

“It was based on a lot of research that we actually looked at… Homework policy wasn’t something that just came up with…The most advanced schools in the entire world they don’t give a lot of homework.” Said Tai Linsay Bainter.

One of the biggest concerns about this policy is how children will adapt in middle school, where their work load is bigger. It’s difficult to not have homework and suddenly have a lot.

“Children would adapt and create new habits of studying.” Said Tai Linsay Bainter.

This difficult decision has been beneficial for the 3rd grade students, because they have more time to do more things that may be more beneficial for them in the future.

“So, so” said Nicolas Bedoya, a 3rd grade student, when he was asked about wether he liked or dislike homework.

Is a decision that teachers and the school is not regretting.

“A child needs his or her childhood.” Said Tai Linsay Bainter.
