The TCS High School Girls futbol team celebrates first place in the 2019 edition of Copa Columbus.

After pandemic restrictions, TCS prepares to host the Copa Columbus 2023 tournament, on March 6-7.

The arrangements for Copa this year will be similar to the tournament before pandemic. The games’ locations will always be in Upper Coliseum and upper fields and the featured sports for both genders will be basketball, volleyball, and soccer.

“All three sports are participating in outside tournaments in order to gain experience for Copa Columbus. We are trying to make this tournament similar to the ones before pandemic.” Freddie Badillo, TCS Athletic Director, said.

Admin has developed a game schedule designed to increase attendance with students ending class earlier to see TCS teams play. Monday matches are played after 1:10pm and Tuesday starting from 12:15.

“I hope for the students to have class from 8-12 and then people can have lunch and watch games from 12-3 so people don’t miss classes and also watch the games.” Juan David Lopez, HS Principal, said.

For the last few weeks each team has been preparing in different ways: Basketball has been playing tournaments against alumni and teachers on Saturdays . Soccer and volleyball have participated in tournaments such as Copa Canadiense and other friendly matches.

“The grade 10 boys in soccer have a very good team that has a lot of experience on the field along with a lot of practice. The 11 and 12 boys don’t have much experience but I’m sure they will play a good role in this tournament,” Urbano Mesa, TCS Futbol Coach, said.

The implementation of the live streaming app called Futto will be used at the event, due to the effectiveness shown in the past Binationals. This allows players to replay videos and evaluate games while simultaneously streaming live for people not present in the event.

“I really like being able to support and watch my son play from work or from home because sometimes it is difficult for me to go to school,” Edwin Arrubla, TCS soccer parent, said.

Invitations to this year’s competition were extended to Benedictinos, Colegio Canadiense, Colegio Cumbres, Marymount School, Colegio San Ignacio, Colegio Montessori, and Colegio San Jose de Las Vegas. Every team has been preparing to face their rivals by physically and mentally training.

“We have been training really hard these past few weeks in order to not only win the tournament but beat last year’s champion. We’ll put up our best effort to advance and accomplish all objectives. ” Santiago Quintero, Grade 11 volleyball player, said.
