Many students, especially girls, are often discouraged from joining FRC due to the perception that it’s a male-dominated field. However the robotics team has been targeting this issue and since then the disparity between girls and boys has decreased.
“We currently have 14 girls on the team. There’s been progress, but there’s still a disparity. I think it’s partly due to stereotypes about STEM being male-dominated, which can sometimes discourage girls from joining. Also, girls might feel less confident in technical roles due to societal norms, but we are working hard to change that mindset,” Emilia Quintero, senior, said.
FRC offers many benefits to its participants, fostering not only technical skills but also personal growth. It puts into practice a variety of skills including leadership, problem solving, and teamwork while allowing participants to see if they would like to study something STEM related.
“Being part of the FRC has sharpened my technical skills in programming, mechanics, and design, which are invaluable for a career in engineering or technology. Additionally, the leadership and teamwork experience I’ve gained has helped me develop essential skills for any future leadership role I pursue. It has also opened my mind to the possibilities of combining technology with social impact,” Quintero said.
The upcoming international competition is useful not only to test the team’s skills but it’s a great opportunity to grow, meet experts, and create connections with the broader robotics community.
“Competing in the US is intense and inspiring. The level of competition is higher, and the atmosphere is incredible. There’s a huge sense of community, where you’re surrounded by teams who share the same passion for innovation. It’s also a place to learn from others and network with potential sponsors, mentors, and even universities, making it a key milestone for the team’s growth,” Quintero said.
The Lightning blue lizards are always looking forward to expanding their team .However members must commit to certain responsibilities. Although prior robotic experience is not required to join ,attending the meetings throughout the week and on Saturdays especially during tournament season is very important.
“It is expected to come to each of the meetings. That’s the biggest effort since coming to school on Saturdays is very annoying ,but as long as you are there, actively participating, you are going to get better and become a great part of the team,” Castaño said.
