The Columbus School’s intramural soccer tournament has brought excitement and energy to the school fields once again. Starting in early October, students from different grades form teams to play friendly matches. These games are not just about winning they’re about teamwork, school pride, and spending time with friends in a fun and relaxed way.
Unlike varsity sports, the intramural games are open to everyone, no matter their skill level. This makes them one of the most popular events at TCS. The games give students a chance to compete while still having fun, and they bring the whole school community together. Whether cheering from the stands or playing on the field, everyone takes part in the excitement that makes these games special every year.
“I think other sports events aren’t as fun or as important for the school,” said Juan Jose Aristizabal, a regular intramural player from 12th grade. “These games are a way to bond with your friends and have a good time.”
For many students, intramurals are a chance to relax and connect. Teams are usually made up of friend groups, which makes the games more personal and enjoyable.
Juan Jose explained how teams are formed. “Teams are formed based on the group of friends that you are in. So if I’m in a group of friends, I will make my team based on that group.” This makes the games feel friendly and welcoming, while also creating fun rivalries. Students from all grades come to watch, cheer, and support their friends, filling the fields with school spirit.
Jose Manuel Velasquez, a player, said the energy during the games is what makes them special. “Playing this soccer and watching it from the side is also very cool. It adds a lot of feeling, so I think it’s the best sport to play,” he said. He added that the cheering crowds make every match feel exciting. “There is a school spirit that is by culture like to scream and everything but it’s good, it’s passionate.”
Of course, running the tournament is not always easy. Juan Jose mentioned that this year the referees became stricter. “One challenge that has occurred recently is that Mr. Urbano made some changes in the referees. Now the referees are much stricter,” he said.Even though that made some players nervous, many agreed it keeps the games fair and respectful for everyone.
Velasquez also shared ideas to make the finals even more exciting. “Maybe in the finals, we can bring Los del Sur the Resistencia to give more energy to it,” he said with a smile. His comment shows how students are always thinking of new ways to make intramural soccer even more fun.
Across schools worldwide, intramural sports have become more than just casual games they’re spaces where students connect, unwind, and show pride in their community. At The Columbus School, this tradition takes shape through soccer, a sport that unites passion, friendship, and healthy competition.
Win or lose, every kick on the field brings The Columbus School community closer together.
