Athletes from The Columbus School and beyond are gearing up to represent their schools in Cali’s highly anticipated binationals, embodying determination and camaraderie.
With soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams training intensively, the binationals tournament brings together young athletes from across Colombia, aiming for victory and showcasing sportsmanship. This year’s event is set to inspire players and spectators alike with its spirited atmosphere.
“I feel like we have a pretty good chance of winning,” said Pablo Kim Lee, a Columbus School basketball player, highlighting the team’s confidence as the tournament approaches.
For many athletes, preparing for binationals means finding a balance between rigorous training schedules and their demanding academic workload, a challenge that tests their discipline and time-management skills.
“Staying consistent with training and balancing when I have to train and when I have to rest has been the hardest part,” Pablo Kim Lee shared, reflecting the dedication required to compete.
While personal drive is essential, teamwork is also a foundational part of each team’s preparation, as athletes work together to create a unified front that enhances their chances of success.
“Teamwork is essential. Individual success does not lead to team success,” emphasized soccer player Pablo Tobar, pointing out the unity and collaboration his team has cultivated.
The high level of competition at binationals calls for athletes to stay mentally sharp and physically prepared, especially when facing the pressures of high-stakes games and intense rivalry.
“It requires focus and increased attention to strategy,” Tobar noted, describing the mental preparation needed for a large-scale event.
Coaches play a vital role in preparing the players for these challenges, teaching them how to manage pressure while instilling confidence and resilience that will carry them through demanding situations.
“I help players focus on their strengths while reminding them to support each other on and off the field,” said Coach Urbano Mesa, who encourages teamwork and resilience in his team.
Beyond the pursuit of victory, the binationals provide students with opportunities for personal growth, allowing them to develop as both athletes and individuals through invaluable life experiences.
“I remember, under pressure, you perform at the level you’ve trained at,” Kim Lee reflected, summarizing the dedication that defines the binationals experience.
