Cartagena November Trip
Rafael Martinez
January 14, 2025
Cartagena is a world-renowned tourist destination celebrated for its vibrant parties and rich historical heritage. In recent years, a new tradition has emerged at The Columbus School, one where many 11th and 12th-grade students choosing Thanksgiving break as the perfect excuse to travel to Cartagena.
Planning for the trip often starts as early as June or July, but the real excitement builds in November. On the day of departure, seniors participate in a traditional event with K-4 students, though their minds are already set on the upcoming adventure. “Even though I had great fun playing with the kids, I could only think of what was going to happen that same night,” Lucas Henao, senior, said.
After the school event, students head straight to the airport, where flights to Cartagena are packed with TCS families and students. These flights turn into pre-parties, with music, laughter, and anticipation filling the air. Cheers erupt upon landing and the trip has officially begun.
Upon arriving in Cartagena, students and their families head to their rented accommodations, often houses or apartments in the vibrant Getsemaní neighborhood. This year, most houses were conveniently within walking distance, reducing the need for risky late-night taxi rides. “It was great compared to past years—having everyone nearby felt safer and more enjoyable,” Natalia Londoño, a mother who attended the trip, said.
The first night out is always electric, with excitement and high expectations setting the tone. With over 150 students attending, coordination is key to ensuring everyone enjoys the nightlife. This year’s favorite disco was 7 Times. “Santiago Lopez, our personero, did a great job organizing and uniting everyone to keep plans clear,” Pablo Tobar, senior, said.
One of the most anticipated parts of the trip is the boat excursions to Cholon and Las Islas del Rosario. Despite the intense Cartagenean sun, these days are unforgettable, with boats connecting to create floating parties where students bond, setting aside grade-year differences.
Another highlight of the trip is the Catamaran night in the Bahía de Cartagena. This elegant evening offers students a chance to dress up, capture memories with friends, and enjoy the breathtaking Cartagena skyline as a backdrop.
By the end of the trip, students are exhausted but filled with memories. This year, a surprise awaited on Sunday morning as they made their way to the airport—they found themselves in the middle of the Cartagena Ironman 70.3. Despite their fatigue, they cheered on the athletes. “It was a great way to end the trip, watching such dedication and resilience,” Londoño said.
