Redirecting Colombia´s Budget Focus

Despite their middle-income country status, 23 million Colombians are poor and 6 million live below the extreme poverty line. Colombia does not have proportional wealth distribution, as it is almost impossible for the average poorman to thrive. If government budget was spent in a more intelligent manner the country itself could improve largely, economically and socially.

In order to improve the economy first the root of the problem must be dealt with, poverty. In order to improve poverty rate in Colombia, education must be improved. Studies show that one year of education can increase someone’s salary by ten percent. As the population is educated, the economy progresses the reason being if, workers salaries are growing then the GDP is also rising. Educating the people also means that there will be more people qualified to work. Unemployment has a high correlation with poverty therefore as unemployment is decreased poverty will naturally decrease. As product you will have a country with better economic status and better quality of life. For example Nordic countries have globally renowned education and it is reflected in their society as they have, lowest crime rates in the world, high quality of life good healthcare, low unemployment rate and a thriving and efficient economy.

Another of Colombia’s major problems is violence and even though it has decreased throughout the years it is still a problem. According to a study by Colombia’s National Center for Historical Memory, 230,000 people have died in the conflict between 1958 and 2017, most of them civilians. One of the reasons that Colombia doesn’t have a very big tourism rate is because of its notorious reputation for crime. If the violence rate decreases then tourism will most likely prosper in Colombia as it is home to amazing scenery and has plenty of different attractions that could lead to millions of tourist visiting Colombia. Tourism could tremendously improve the economy as it is one of the leading forms of Economy in the world, it provides with 7.61 trillion dollars to the global economy.

To conclude if I had budget surplus I would spend it on Education and Security, the reason being if there is focus on these two economical factors then there will be a large chain set off  that will benefit multiple areas in Colombia, economically and socially. The country will thrive and by simply focusing economical resources in a prioritized manner the lives of millions of citizens will change.
