16 and Pregnant: A Good T.V. Show for Teens?
The TV show 16 and Pregnant is causing girls to believe that if they get pregnant at a young age they are going to be fine just like the girls from the TV show.
16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom are shows that present the life of teen moms at a young age, the way they interact with their child, parents and partners. Originally this show was created with the purpose of preventing young girls from having babies.
“Every time the show airs, MTV promotes a website called StayTeen.org that encourages you to enjoy your teen years and avoid the responsibilities that come with too-early pregnancy and parenting” MTV source revealed. According to Time Magazine, it’s still in question if 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom prevent or promote teen pregnancy. “Approximately one million teenage girls give birth in the United States each year, according to KidsHealth.org. In addition to the physical risks and financial difficulties, teenage moms experience significant social changes as well. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry emphasizes that feelings of anger, denial, and guilt are common for teen moms. These emotions and the demands of a new baby can be extremely challenging to overcome.” commented Welton, Rose. “The Social Impact of Being a Teen Mom.” LIVESTRONG.COM, Leaf Group, 13 June 2017, www.livestrong.com/article/559877-the-social-impact-of-being-a-teen-mom/.
Girls who think that teen moms are having a good time because they are on T.V., earning money thanks to the show are mistaken because there is more to their life then what is presented. Statistics say that about 75% of teen moms are poor, have problems with their families and are also on their own with the children.
