UNleashing Fun: Press Brings Entertainment to Model UN

UNleashing Fun: Press Brings Entertainment to Model UN

In February and March, schools host SHMUN and COSMUN events. The press organizes engaging games and activities for delegates, boosting participation and enjoyment in the model United Nations.

At the heart of SHMUN and COSMUN, Prensa’s main aim is to keep delegates and others entertained during the model United Nations experience. They achieve this through social media campaigns, giveaways, and fun games during breaks. Challenges like making TikTok videos add excitement and encourage active involvement throughout the event.

“Through engaging social media campaigns, interactive giveaways, and entertaining games, Prensa keeps delegates and participants captivated. Embracing modern platforms like TikTok not only adds a fun element but also creates active participation, making COSMUN an unforgettable experience for all,” Joaquin Perez, Sub-Secretary of COSMUN said.

Both events offer activities to entertain delegates and ease the pressure of debating. These include games with mixed or single-gender groups. Organized by the press, they aim to generate innovative ideas shared on social media for more recognition, reducing delegate stress with a calmer atmosphere.

“I love how fun these activities are! Whenever I see or join in, everyone’s having a blast, smiling, and laughing. This is what a model UN is about, and sharing on social media gives us lasting memories,” Sara Mejia, UNODC President said.

Starting with SHMUN, one of the models in Medellin, organizers aimed to make their 10th year memorable. To accomplish this, they implemented various giveaways and activities, such as delegates engaging in games like musical chairs and each committee producing a TikTok video. These activities provided a break for delegates to relax and interact with others in a friendly manner, beyond just debating.

“I found it fascinating to see how many of my delegates became genuinely excited and happy upon learning about the press activities. Following a particularly intense debating session, the press announced an activity involving creating a TikTok video, with the award going to the most liked submission,” Santiago Ramos, UNODC President said.

COSMUN, another famous UN model in Medellin, consistently emphasizes the enjoyment and experience of its delegates over other considerations. The press team, composed of around 10+ individuals, actively engages with committees by taking photos, posing fun questions, and presenting challenges, providing delegates with opportunities to momentarily divert their attention from debating.

“As part of the press team, I was able to really help out with the activities and organize the whole cupid press. It took us a lot of work, but in the end, we were really able to bring smiles to a lot of faces with the activities we did, which all had a reward,” Emilio Fajardo, Press team member said.

Being a delegate can be stressful, especially in challenging group situations when the pressure to perform is high. This stress can take over their thoughts as they try to figure out what to do next. The press can help reduce this stress by getting delegates to focus on enjoying themselves and getting involved in the activity. The main aim is to make sure that participants have a good time and learn something positive. It’s important to remember that too much stress can make the experience bad, so it’s important to make sure that delegates are feeling okay during the event.

“For us, it’s important that every delegate has the best experience, and we always do our best for everyone to be able to participate in these events because, at the end of the day, they will feel more relaxed and calm instead of just debating all the time,” Joaquin Perez said.
