No Excuses Needed for Forgotten Homework
Taking a page out of the Colombian election playbook, each 8th grade Columbus School student who voted in the recent STUCO elections was awarded a Certificado Electoral, as an incentive for their participation.
Much like the benefits that adults receive for voting, the 8th graders receive the benefit of an extension for any project up to 3 days.
“Up to now, some of my students have already used this benefit by postponing their project due dates,” Luz Miryam Arango, 8th grade Sociales teacher said.
The rules for the use of certificates were established and clearly communicated to prevent misunderstandings and misuse. If a student loses their certificado electoral, the benefit is no longer available. In addition, it can be used for one three day extension or three-single day extensions.
“In my opinion, it’s a good idea because it motivates all students to participate in the elections, as well as when we grow up, to know the importance of voting,” Maria Guzman, 8th grade STUCO Representative said.
Educational research shows that this type of extension can be beneficial for students who need additional time to do their work.
According to Kate Susman, biology professor at Vassar College, For students who have had no difficulty keeping up with their work, a short extension on an assignment can help them get back on track.
STUCO’s goal is to implement certificates in all 8th grade classes, not only Sociales.
“We are not giving away grades, but the student feels the benefit,” Luz Miryam Arango, said.
One of STUCO’s roles in Middle School is acting as the voice of students in the educational process. They also help social, recreational, and cultural dynamics of the institution.
”The main function is to ensure that the right of the students that is consecrated in the educational community handbook is fulfilled,” Arango, said.
