The arrival of a new principal at our middle school last year has stirred minimal waves, but subtle shifts are noticeable. When a new principal takes charge, students, staff, and faculty often anticipate changes. However, in this case, most agree that the transition from the previous principal, Mr. Pulgarin, to Mr. Matt has been surprisingly smooth, with many describing the atmosphere as “mostly the same.” Still, some subtle changes have been observed, particularly regarding leadership style and attention to staff duties.
“I felt the same, like it was the same for me. I liked Pulgarin, but for me it was the same,” said Camilo Tobar, 8th grade student and uprising highschooler.
For some of the office staff, such as Reynis Gutierrez, substitute teacher, and secretary; the transition has been relatively easy to adjust to, primarily because the two principals have very similar approaches and work habits. Their comparable styles have ensured that daily routines and processes have remained largely unchanged, making the adjustment smoother for those working closely with them.
“Bueno realmente el cambio no fue muy fuerte la verdad fue normal. Mat y Mr. Pulgarin tienen una metodología de trabajo muy parecida,” Gutierrez, staff member, said.
Despite the general sense of continuity, staff have noticed that Mr. Matt pays close attention to details, especially when it comes to overseeing staff responsibilities, making this a noticeable aspect of his leadership style.
“Está más pendiente a las funciones de los profesores (…) siempre está como paseando por los salones,” Guitierrez said.
For students, the overall daily atmosphere has mainly remained the same. Many describe a sense of continuity, without noticing significant changes in school policies or leadership approaches. However, some have pointed out minor adjustments, such as Mr. Matt’s increased visibility around the school and his frequent classroom visits, though these changes haven’t dramatically altered their school experience. “Not much, it’s been pretty much the same,” Tobar said.
Students have, however, appreciated Mr. Matt’s approachable nature, something that stands out in comparison to other school leaders.
“Yes, I think it’s pretty easy to talk to him… he is very open and he is mostly free,” Pablo Medina, a newly arrived 9th grade student, said.
As the school year unfolds, it’s still uncertain whether more substantial changes will be implemented, but for now, the transition has felt stable and familiar to most. While there’s curiosity about potential shifts, the overall feeling remains consistent, with the new leadership blending smoothly into the school’s existing environment.
“Siempre trato de hacer bien mi trabajo y él siempre está muy atento de mis necesidades,” Gutierrez said.
