Senior Emilia Quintero shares, “I worked on a robot that had to do complex tasks both manually operated and autonomously. It taught me a lot about coding and debugging since we ran into so many obstacles. I learned to keep testing and improving until it finally worked.” Through these challenges, students develop resilience and consistency, learning to persevere in the face of failure.
TCS alumnus Pablo Arango reflects, “My 4-year journey through TOM was filled with challenges I had to tackle. The consistency and resilience I developed through robotics enabled me to face these challenges and keep moving forward.”In addition to critical thinking, robotics also teaches foundational STEM skills, such as coding, engineering, and design. Quintero adds, “I’ve learned coding, basic engineering, and teamwork. I’ve also developed patience and resilience because things don’t always work right the first time.”
Collaboration and Teamwork: Essential Skills in Robotics
Collaboration and teamwork are at the core of robotics education. Robotics projects require students to pool their strengths and work together toward a shared goal. Quintero explains, “We each have different strengths, so our team is divided based on the skills of each individual. Collaboration is key; constantly sharing updates and making sure we’re on the same page ensures our success.”
Additionally, robotics helps students gain valuable experience in conflict resolution and adaptability. “Time is a factor that plays a huge role in our team,” says Quintero. “We must construct a robot in a matter of weeks, so oftentimes, tensions rise. Robotics has taught us how to adapt to challenges, solve problems, and reach resolutions.” These projects also foster communities of collaboration, encouraging teamwork without sacrificing the spirit of healthy competition. Arango recalls his time at the FIRST Robotics Competition, saying, “My time at FIRST Robotics taught me the true value of collaboration. Winning does not mean thriving on someone else’s failure. Being the leader of the robotics team enabled me to realize that I can do well, and I can help others do well.”
Preparing for STEM Careers and Lifelong Learning
Robotics education not only prepares students for careers in STEM but also nurtures lifelong learning. Early exposure to robotics through programs, workshops, and events allows students to explore various STEM fields, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for future careers. Arango shares, “It made me realize how much I enjoyed solving technical problems and creating things. Robotics gave me a taste of engineering, and it felt like the right path for me.”
Moreover, the skills developed in robotics are invaluable in higher education and beyond. “The coding and problem-solving skills I developed in high school were very useful, especially in my introductory engineering classes,” says Arango. “I felt more prepared to tackle complex projects.” Robotics also fosters a problem-solving mindset that transcends technology, benefiting students in any field they pursue. “Robotics education builds critical thinking and technical skills, both of which are in high demand. It also encourages a problem-solving mindset, which is valuable in any field,” adds Arango.
