Every day, students walk into school and expect everything to work. The floors are clean, the gates are open, and food is ready at lunch. Most of the time, no one stops to think about who makes this happen. It feels normal, almost automatic. However, behind this routine are staff members who work every day to keep the school running. Even though they are always there, they are often unnoticed.
In school, most attention goes to teachers and students because they are directly involved in learning. But the school could not function without staff members. Teacher Camilo Hoyos explains how present they are in daily life: “I interact with the staff members every day, like, from the moment I enter the school, I say hi.” This shows that they are always around, even if students do not always realize it. He also points out their importance by saying that “they directly influence the performance of every single aspect in the school.” In other words, everything depends on their work.
Their role becomes even more important when problems happen. If something breaks or there is an issue, staff members are the ones who fix it quickly. Hoyos says, “as soon as I mention a problem to the staff members, they respond immediately.” This quick response helps the school continue without major interruptions. Because of this, students can focus on learning instead of dealing with problems around them.
From a student’s point of view, it is easy to overlook this work. Alicia Baquero explains that “many students don’t fully recognize how important these workers are, because their work happens quietly in the background.” This means that when everything works well, people do not notice the effort behind it. Students get used to clean spaces and safe environments, so they stop thinking about who is responsible for them.
However, when students take a moment to think, they can understand the value of each role. Baquero says, “cleaners help keep the school clean, security guards keep everyone safe, and cafeteria workers prepare food so everything runs smoothly.” Each of these jobs may seem simple, but together they make a big difference. Without them, the school would not feel the same.
In fact, imagining the school without staff members shows how essential they are. Baquero clearly states, “if they were not there, the school would be messy, unsafe, and harder to enjoy and study.” This helps students realize that staff members are not just helpers, but a necessary part of the school. They create the conditions that allow everyone else to do their work.
Valentina Barrientos, the school personera, also explains why students sometimes forget about them. She says, “I think they are present every day, but sometimes they can become almost invisible to students because we’re so used to everything just functioning.” When something is always working, people stop noticing it. This is why staff members can feel invisible, even though they are always present.
Still, this can change if students become more aware. Barrientos explains, “once you start paying attention, you realize how much they actually contribute to the daily environment of the school.” Paying attention is the first step. When students notice small details, like clean classrooms or organized spaces, they begin to understand the effort behind them.
With this understanding, students can take action. Barrientos suggests simple ways to show appreciation: “something as simple as greeting them, saying thank you, or treating them with respect goes a long way.” These small actions can make staff members feel seen and valued. She also adds that “as student leaders, we can also encourage a culture where everyone in the school community is valued, not just teachers and students. Even small initiatives, like recognition days or student messages of appreciation, could help make their work feel more visible.” This shows that even small changes can have a big impact.
In conclusion, school staff members are an essential part of everyday life at school. Even though their work is often unnoticed, it affects everything around us. From keeping spaces clean to making sure everyone is safe, they help create an environment where students can learn and feel comfortable. By becoming more aware and showing appreciation, students can help change the way staff members are seen. Recognizing their work is not difficult, but it is very important. When we start to notice them, we begin to understand that they are truly the invisible backbone of our school.
