Soccer Team Seniors Miss Tournament Due to Convivencia

The high school soccer team lost the opportunity to go to a tournament in Cartagena because the 12th grade Convivencia was planned for the same day.

Seniors from the soccer team are missing Copa Cojowa in Cartagena September 28-30 because the school planned the convivencia for the 29th. It was neither the fault of the players or the school, but there was a lot of miscommunication in the process.

“The tournament date matches with the day of the Convivencia of the seniors, therefore we won’t be able to go.” Urbano Mesa, High School Soccer Coach, said.

TCS planned the 12th grade convivencia for the 29th of September, therefore Seniors could not go to the cup in Cartagena.  Since the seniors play a big role in the soccer team, the whole team had to stay here in Medellin.

“Because of the seniors, now there is not enough people for the team to go to the cup,” Mesa said.

The team had to take a certain amount of players to the cup, and without the seniors in the team, there was not enough people to go.

“I understand it is not the schools fault either,” Mesa said.

The school had no control over the dates of the tounament, also they couldn’t have known the dates would match. Soccer coach, Urbano Mesa, understands the schools position and doesn’t blame anyone. Some of the members of the team think the school didn’t manage the situation correctly.

“The school sent us the tournament information, but then they cancelled it without telling us,” Santiago Giraldo, member of the soccer team, said.

The school mistake was the miscommunication  with the students, according to Santiago. A cup is an opportunity for the team, and the students wanted to take this opportunity.

“Us, the players, really wanted the opportunity to go to Cartagena to play in this cup,”  Giraldo said.

Most of the soccer team will have the opportunity to participate in Copa Cojowa and in other cups in the future. For seniors, this is their last year in school and therefore this was their last opportunity to go to Copa Cojowa. Now they have the rest of the year which has other big soccer events like Binacionales in November.

“If some things would have happened differently, the team would probably be going to Cartagena to play the cup,” Mesa said.
